Accessing Newspaper Archives through the Library of Michigan

The Library of Michigan's newspaper collections are not just archives, but powerful tools for uncovering hidden stories, tracking systemic issues, and bringing important narratives to light.

With a simple digital library card, Michiganders can access an expansive collection of newspapers spanning local and national publications. The Library of Michigan collection includes historical archives of major Michigan newspapers like the Detroit Free Press (dating back to 1831), Detroit News (from 1873), and the Michigan Chronicle, alongside local publications from cities across the state including Grand Rapids, Lansing, Flint, and Kalamazoo. The library also provides access to major national newspapers with deep historical archives, such as the Chicago Tribune, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post. Getting Your Library of Michigan Digital Card

Who Can Apply:

• Michigan residents
• Out-of-state students enrolled in a Michigan college or university
• State of Michigan employees (special application process)

Online eCard Option:

• Visit the Library Cardpage
• Complete the online application
• You'll receive an email with card information and password instructions
• Immediate access to digital resources
• Note: If you would like to get full physical library privileges, you'll need to visit the Lansing facility with a valid Michigan ID

In-Person Full-Service Card:

• Visit the Library of Michigan's 2nd floor Reference Desk
• Bring a valid Michigan driver's license or state ID with current address
• Out-of-state students: Bring your home state driver's license and current Michigan student ID
